Professor Obaid Siddiqi passes away
Obaid Siddiqi FRS, National Research Professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) passed away on 26 July 2013. He is survived by his wife Asiya, sons Imran and Kalim, and daughters Yumna and Diba.
Obaid Siddiqi was born in 1932 in Uttar Pradesh and received his early education at Aligarh Muslim University. He obtained his Phd from the University of Glasgow, working on microbial genetics with Guido Pontecorvo. He carried out post-doctoral research with Alan Garen at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and University of Pennsylvania. This work led to the discovery of stop codons in the genetic code and the mechanism of chain termination during protein synthesis.
In 1962, at the invitation of Homi Bhabha, he set up the Molecular Biology Unit at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai. The formation of this unit is widely regarded as a transformational event in the landscape of modern biology research in India. Thirty years later, he would become the founding director of the TIFR National Center for Biological Sciences in Bangalore.
In the early seventies, Siddiqi began to study the genetic basis of behaviour using Drosophila as a model. Working with Seymour Benzer at Caltech he discovered a set of temperature sensitive paralytic mutants that exhibited defects in the electrical activity of nerves and muscles. This discovery led to a deeper understanding of the mechanistic basis of neuronal function and heralded the dawn of the field of Behavioral Genetics.
In the nineteen eighties, Siddiqi and his students at TIFR, Mumbai carried out pioneering work on the genetic basis of taste and smell in Drosophila. These discoveries paved the way for the modern understanding of how senses such as taste and smell are detected and encoded in the brain. He was active in this area of research till the end of his life, maintaining an active laboratory as an Emeritus Professor at NCBS.
Obaid Siddiqi's contributions have been widely recognized both nationally and internationally. He was an elected member of the Royal Society, London (FRS), the US National Academy of Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences, Trieste, the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (President 1986-89), National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad, and Maharashtra Academy of Sciences.
He has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Bhatnagar Prize, INSA Golden Jubilee Medal, Birla Samarak Kosh National Award, Goyal Foundation Prize, Aryabhatta Medal by INSA, Bhasin Foundation Prize, Science Congress Plaque of Honours, BC Roy Award for Biomedical Research and Firodia Award for Basic Sciences.
Obaid Siddiqi has held visiting professorships at Yale University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology and Cambridge University. He was twice Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholar at Caltech and was a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge. Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, Jamia Hamdard, Kalyani University, IIT Bombay, Jamia Millia Islamia and Central University of Hyderabad have conferred upon him the honorary degree of D.Sc.
In the words of K VijayRaghavan, former director of NCBS: "There are a daring few who define new intellectual quests, and whose courage and leadership create a culture...today, we celebrate Obaid Siddiqi whose foresight, determination and quiet courage has transformed research in molecular biology in India at least twice and whose scientific successes span many fields of biology. While establishing institutional excellence and instilling an iconoclastic culture of independence and freethinking, these pioneering efforts have led to wide appreciation, both of the beauty and value of Obaid's science and of his leadership in institution building, as models to emulate."
According to Satyajit Mayor, current Director of NCBS: "Obaid Siddiqi was one of the finest biologists India has ever had. His contribution to the growth of Molecular Biology in India is unparalleled. Throughout his career, Obaid always set an example for doing science at its most creative. He pioneered efforts in establishing the field of Behavioral Genetics based on his own research on the genetics of olfactory sensation in Drosophila. At the same time in his gentle but persuasive style he motivated a legion of younger colleagues by doing excellent science himself whilst in India. In 1992 he established the National Centre for Biological Sciences as a Centre of TIFR, to achieve excellence and to nurture fundamental curiosity to explore new frontiers in biological research. The realization and embodiment of these core principles, through the growth of the Centre over twenty years, is yet again a testimony to the foresight of this visionary man. Establishing an institution that promotes enquiry at all scales of Biology is indeed a pioneering experiment in how research in biological sciences may be conducted in the modern era of molecular biology.
It is not a surprise that Obaid Siddiqi was also one of India most decorated scientists. We will miss our friend, philosopher and muse deeply, and hope to cherish his dreams and ambitions in the way we would know he would want us to- by building on the edifice he has left us, and doing even more creative science."

A great loss
Venkatesan Sundaresan Professor, College of Biological Sciences University of California-Davis sundar@ucdavis.edu
Obaid Siddiqui was an extraordinary scientist and a great man, a towering figure in the Indian scientific landscape which he helped reshape, especially in the biological sciences. Brilliant, yet unassuming, gracious, artistic, decisive and straight forward, he led by example and inspired so many of my friends and colleagues. I had heard of him from Jim Watson when I was at Cold Spring Harbor, Jim mentioned Obaid as an exceptional scientist from the old phage group who had returned to India to try and make a difference. It was a great honour to get to know him through my periodic visits to India and through his son Imran. I remember well the last time I met Obaid, it was in November at NCBS, he looked a little frail but still as engaged and thoughtful as ever. He told me that he had more time to practice on his sarod now, and I expressed a wish to hear him play on my next visit. Alas, that wish will not come true, at least not in this world! This is a big loss to all of us who knew him, to India, and to the world. Rest in peace, Obaid, we will cherish your memory and your contributions which will live on for long after.
A great loss to the country

It is shocking to learn that great molecular biologist of the country Prof. Obaid Siddiqui is no more. In him we have lost a mentor, an institute builder and pioneer researcher. I recall his excellent lecture " Olfaction in Drosophila" delivered as the Chief Guest of the IX Annual Conference of the Indian Academy of Neurosciences at Lucknow, March 16-18, 1990 at Industrial Toxicology Research Centre (ITRC). We all are going to miss him but his research contributions and institutions he built will always inspire us to work. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family

Here is the link to my personal tribute to OS, my first science mentor: http://www.countercurrents.org/khurana300713.htm It is very rare that individuals are institutions in themselves. Such individuals are genuine visionaries who start a wave, who create a school of thought and like a banyan tree keep extending inspiring branches through offshoots much beyond when they are gone. The late Obaid Siddiqi, who many rightly consider the father of modern Indian biology and the last of the giants of the South Asian science scene, was one such rare individual..................

As so many have said, Obaid Siddiqi was a pioneer, a visionary, and one of the giant figures in Indian Science. He was a Scientist, an excellent teacher, and a compassionate man. I owe him so much, and his passing is a great loss to all who were lucky enough to have worked with him, or learned from him. I will cherish the years spent with him, listening to the talks that so often lasted many hours but still held our attention and interest, and letting his vast stores of knowledge and perspective seep into me. He was the most influential figure in my life, supported me through a very rough few years, and above all, helped me see the elegance of the scientific method that I now proselytize. I join his children, family, friends and colleagues in mourning his loss, and at the same time, feel extraordinarily thankful for having had the opportunity to know him and to be his student. His legacy as a scientist will live on in all his students, their children and their own students. It certainly does in me and mine, down to the words I choose, and the work I do each day.

NAMO NAMA SRI GURU PADUKHABYAM, which means, salutations and salutations to the sandals of my Guru Prof. Obaid Siddiqi. I remember when I was his student, still smiling, a great scientist and above all a true human. I believe him as a symbol of greatest soul and working with him was an honor for me. I recall, every morning he would walk into the electrophysiology (EP) room with his great smile, standing tall and very confident even at the age of 80’s, I was amazed by his tremendous energy. He demonstrated and introduced me to every equipment in the EP room while we both sat on ground. While he made figures and equations on a paper or any surface, I could see in his smile, the joy of doing science and teaching. It was truly a very touching moment for me. He taught me how to face challenges and the deep pleasure of doing science. I am really very fortunate to have him in my life and I regret that there will be no such satisfying moment in life my again..:(
TIFR and Obaid a turning point in my career
Surekha Zingde, ACTREC Navi Mumbai
My thoughts go back to July of 1977 when I returned to Mumbai after completing my PhD at Boston University. While at Boston I had written to him inquiring about the possibility of an opening in the Molecular Biology Unit at TIFR. I was informed “come by and we will see”. So I did. I came back to Mumbai with no official commitments in my hands regarding a placement. I called Dr Siddiqi from Churchgate station and mentioned that I was in Mumbai and could I stop by. He called me over and before the day was done I was a Fellow at TIFR. These events will always remain etched in my memory. TIFR has been an experience where I learnt the fun of science under the quiet but firm and warm leadership of Obaid. After a two year stay at TIFR I moved on to Cancer Research Inst/ACTREC and was there till I superannuated this March. My years at TIFR with Obaid will always remain with me as a turning point in my life and career. His warm smile when I wished him Happy Birthday (80y) in Jan 12 will remain in my mind for years to come. May his soul rest in peace. My thoughts are with Asiya and his family in these times. Dear Vijay and Jitu The passing away of Obaid Siddiqi is a great loss to his family, his close colleagues, to NCBS and TIFR, and to Indian and International Science. My sincerest condolences to you both and to the NCBS family. I first met Obaid at St Xavier's College in 1967 when he came with Franklin Stahl for a lecture in the college during a meeting at TIFR on ` Microbial Genetics in Molecular Biology'. I still remember his informal inviting style and the glint of fascination in his eye. I was most fascinated by molecular biology and still am. After that I visited TIFR biology for many discussions with the biologists about the physics biology interface. After joining TIFR he was my friend and philosopher. During the early stages of the founding of ICTS, he sat with me and Avinash Dhar telling us about the history of the founding of the NCBS. These conversations were very important and inspiring for us as was the fact that an institution like NCBS existed and is possible in India! ICTS is indebted to Obaid. I am writing this because this is a lesser known fact. Obaid came over to ICTS for half a day during the visit of Sydney Brenner last year. He was very very happy that Sydney was able to visit and discuss and meet with young scientists at NCBS and ICTS. Obaid will be missed by so many but his legacy lives on. He was also one of those who truly carried further the legacy of Homi Bhabha. I have a sense of personal satisfaction that there is considerable footage of Obaid speaking about the beginnings of biology at TIFR in TIFR's film on Homi Bhabha. Spenta

I am writing to express the deep sadness that all of us in the WCS India team feel at the death of Prof. Obaid Siddiqui. His loss is irreplaceable not just because he was a great biologist and a mentor, but also because of the incredible warmth and old world courtesy that radiated from him. Kindly share our sincere condolences with all colleagues at NCBS as well as Prof. Siddiqui's family. He not only a played a vital role in the formation of NCBS as is well known, when Anindhya and I were trying to find a host for our proposed MSc wildlife program he encouraged us enormously right from the beginning. On a personal note, many years before NCBS was established in Bangalore, my wife Prathibha had met him in TIFR in Mumbai with her then collaborator computational scientist late Prof. R. Narasimha. I distinctly recall her telling me what an impressive person he was... With Regards, Ullas

Its really a very sad day. I had the opportunity to meet him twice and hear his lectures a number of times. He has been a great source of inspiration and a great teacher. Its a sort of personal loss to me. May he rest in peace and continue to bless us all and guide us to build a better future.
RIP, Dr. Siddiqi!
A scientific legend that I never had the opportunity to meet! :( RIP, Dr. Siddiqi...
Long Live Obaid
Obaid used to tell us, half tauntingly; "What you have in your colleges, we do not have at the TIFR.... this large number of hands of minds of undergraduate students." Looks like, some of us took this comment literally! So, years after, when we were to start the Collaborative Undergraduate Biology Education (CUBE), we chose to name the Start-up Award for undergraduate colleges engaged in collaborative research, as Obaid Siddiqi CUB Research Start-up Award/Grant. While giving his consent on 25th July, exactly an year ago, he mailed us thus: "Dear Arunan, Your project is an interesting one. By all means use my name if that helps. If you discover really enthusiastic students, I could offer one of your prize winners a short stay in my lab to do some experiments on behaviour. Would that be of use? Best wishes, Yours, Obaid" For us, Obaid is among those undergraduate students and teachers, today. Long live Obaid! Arunan

Truly shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Prof. Obaid Siddiqi. I remember him from the late seventies when I attended a summer camp as a National Science Talent scholar in IIT Mumbai and he came to speak to us with his very first Ph.D student the late Veronica Rodrigues. I have had occasion to meet and speak to him at the Goa conference on neurosciences in 1988 and later at NCBS. His gentleness is what struck me the most. I also know that he was a very open minded scientist who had friends like Prof. Evelyn Fox Keller whom he had invited to India at some point. I have also heard that he was an accomplished sarod player. It is an end of an era for India's neuroscience. He leaves behind a rich legacy both in the discoveries he has made and also that he has helped others make. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace. Asha Gopinathan

A great teacher, researcher passes away. A huge loss. On of the best examples of what scientific temperament means. May his soul rest in peace.
He will be missed
This is truly the end of an important era in Indian Science. Obaid's conviction in his research and his steely determination were most admirable. But for him and people who were trained with him, many Indian students like me would have never discovered the joys of learning fly genetics and the importance of scientific endeavor in our lives and society. He leaves a legacy that is here to stay and grow. I will fondly remember many a conversations with him in the NCBS cafeteria. His humility and respect for others was something to aspire for. A true gentleman scientist of our times! I wish his family and friends courage and solace. His legacy will always be cherished.

I'm shocked to happen upon this piece of very sad news. I deeply regret not having met him in my recent visit. I hope his family and close friends find the strength to carry on. As I read the several anecdotes and tributes coming from so many spread across the globe, people who have known him and cherished their time with him, I realize how lucky I have been for the chance I was given to work in his lab and get a peek at how this man thought about science. I owe so much to him, and cannot thank him enough. I'm certain that his spirit will live on in the science that traces its existence back to him and his ideas.
