Truly shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Prof. Obaid Siddiqi. I remember him from the late seventies when I attended a summer camp as a National Science Talent scholar in IIT Mumbai and he came to speak to us with his very first Ph.D student the late Veronica Rodrigues. I have had occasion to meet and speak to him at the Goa conference on neurosciences in 1988 and later at NCBS. His gentleness is what struck me the most. I also know that he was a very open minded scientist who had friends like Prof. Evelyn Fox Keller whom he had invited to India at some point. I have also heard that he was an accomplished sarod player.
It is an end of an era for India's neuroscience. He leaves behind a rich legacy both in the discoveries he has made and also that he has helped others make.
My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.
