An epidemic has spread through NCBS and authorities are clueless on how to deal with it. Come 5pm and instead of running to catch the shuttle back home, students are glued to their laptop screens watching the latest football match. PIs all over have been complaining that lab productivity has dropped to near zero levels.

The symptoms were first noticed two weeks ago when students from Upinder Bhalla’s lab were found screaming and jumping in the lab. Concerned passersby rushed in thinking there may have been a lab mishap but it turned out that Lionel Messi had missed a goal. As days passed on, many small groups of students were seen in the hallways whispering and gesturing wildly like plotting conspirators. A student who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals told us that they would gather in one of the labs on the second floor and watch the game.

“Oh God! We missed the shuttle, it’s a Sunday evening, it’s pouring, where are we gonna eat now?” Pat comes the reply, “Chill dude, FARAN’s hai na, we will surely find something to eat there”.

“Chalo Yaar, I am tired of working, let’s take a break”.

“But it’s 11:30 man, kya break, and what do you wanna do at this time?”

“Let’s go to FARAN’s and play TT”.

Each Saturday evening NCBS News puts out a new edition, and highlights the lead story of the week. A big part of the lead story is the accompanying graphic, which also adorns and refreshes the NCBS home page. Most of the lead story images have been the result of the graphic artistry of NCBS's own Shovamayee Maharana.

You can see all of the images in one place now by clicking here or at any time by choosing "Lead Story Graphics!" from the main Navigation bar, top right of screen.

It does not take long for anyone starting up research in a big centre to realise how much their success depends upon the expertise and dedication of their institution's general staff. A centre like NCBS is no simple enterprise, often having to function much like a city in miniature. Innumerable services must run smoothly in the background not only to facilitate basic research activities but to enable a remarkable range of ancillary amenities available on campus: housing, dining, childcare, mail, transport, banking, sports and entertainment, travel assistance, conference hosting and medical care. Given the efficiency, reliability and friendliness of the staff who make this possible at NCBS, the Director K. VijayRaghavan took great pleasure at the recent Republic Day festivities in thanking and honouring, on everyone's behalf, some of the individuals and units that have provided truly superlative efforts in the last year. "Our Admin, Technical and Service Staff are true heroes, comparable to the best anywhere in the world." says Dr VijayRaghavan, "They are the unseen force which keeps our system running well. Honouring our colleagues once a year is very important and reminds us how necessary they are for the success of our science."

Sports and recreational activities at NCBS gained momentum recently with the opening of the sports facilities of the SCDC (Sports Cum Dining Complex). The new facilities provide a ray of moonlight to brighten the lives of students too often caught up in a vicious circle of work and worry. Every evening now sports lovers flock to the SCDC, a much welcome addition to NCBS culture. Those who used to take an evening walk or jog around the nearby GKVK campus now throng to the SCDC. The efforts of Engineering and Administration, and the construction staff themselves, have made this all possible and must be applauded.

Recently, NCBS was the venue for the shooting of a documentary for a Spanish television channel in Madrid. The show, “Madrilenos por el mundo”, documents the lives of Spanish expatriates all over the world and for this episode the spotlight will be on the life of resident Spaniard Eva Romero. Eva, a post-doc at NCBS in the molecular trafficking laboratory, has made Bangalore her home for the past two years.
