Shinya Yamanaka comes to NCBS

Shinya Yamanaka, the doyen of stem cell biology, was at NCBS on 30th January 2012. In Bangalore to deliver a talk at the Indian Institute of Science as part of the Cell Press-TNQ India Distinguised Lectureship series, he took time out from his hectic schedule to interact with students from NCBS and inStem.

The Fabric of their Friendship: NCBS and iCeMS strengthen bonds

NCBS and inStem have signed a partnership agreement with the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMs), Japan to set up a new satellite lab in NCBS. To herald this new partnership, a delegation from iCeMS recently visited NCBS and presented a series of talks on the different areas of research being carried out at iCeMs. The conference was streamed live to an audience at iCeMs, Japan.

The conference was opened by Mr. Masayuki Tsuchikawa, Consul Head of the consulate of Japan, Bangalore. Professor Norio Nakatsuji, Director of iCeMs spoke briefly about the institute and then presented Dr. VijayRaghavan a kimono-no-obi to herald the new partnership. The antique sash was made in Nishijin district from obi silk, exclusive to Kyoto city and dates back to the early 1900s. The kimono will be put on display at the new satellite lab.

An epidemic has spread through NCBS and authorities are clueless on how to deal with it. Come 5pm and instead of running to catch the shuttle back home, students are glued to their laptop screens watching the latest football match. PIs all over have been complaining that lab productivity has dropped to near zero levels.

The symptoms were first noticed two weeks ago when students from Upinder Bhalla’s lab were found screaming and jumping in the lab. Concerned passersby rushed in thinking there may have been a lab mishap but it turned out that Lionel Messi had missed a goal. As days passed on, many small groups of students were seen in the hallways whispering and gesturing wildly like plotting conspirators. A student who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals told us that they would gather in one of the labs on the second floor and watch the game.
