NCBS Mourns the Passing of Prof. Peter Hamilton Raven

The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) deeply mourns the passing of Prof. Peter Hamilton Raven (1936–2026), who served as a member of the NCBS International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) beginning in 2008.

Prof. Raven, widely known for his pioneering work on coevolution, played a significant role in shaping NCBS during a critical phase of its growth. His presence on the ISAB brought not only scientific insight but also a global perspective that helped strengthen the institute’s vision of pursuing biology across scales, within and beyond the laboratory.

Reflecting on his association with NCBS, Prof. L.S Shashidhara noted that “with the sad demise of Prof. Raven, the world has lost a great advocate of biodiversity conservation using modern scientific methods, and NCBS has lost its mentor, advisor and friend.”

Prof. Uma Ramakrishnan recalled the intellectual and emotional impact of his work: “We were lucky to have had Prof. Raven on our advisory board. He cared deeply about ecology and biodiversity and its loss, a sentiment that continues to drive those of us who work in nature.”

Prof. K. VijayRaghavan highlighted Raven’s unique role in shaping conversations at NCBS: “Peter did all the usual tasks at the ISAB carefully and gracefully. His ability to translate across contexts and perspectives made him a true global citizen, and his association lent confidence to NCBS’s commitment to biology across scales.” He further added, “NCBS is fortunate to have had an association with him.”
