    Experiments in rats show some bad memories can be forgotten

    It is believed that exaggerated response to bad memories is similar for all negative memories. A team of Indian scientists, namely, Mohammed Mostafizur Rahman, Ashutosh Shukla and Sumantra Chattarji from the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inSTEM) have shown that exaggerated response and difficulty to get rid of bad memories could depend on whether the bad memory was formed before or after a stressful event.

       Today science has become more monoglot than ever, with English assuming near universal dominance. And yet, not very long ago, Newton wrote Principia Mathematica in Latin, Einstein communicated his first influential papers in German and a large extent of Marie Curie’s work was published in French. Communication in English is valuable, as it sets a dais for scientific interactions across the globe and more importantly, prevents varied interpretations of scientific text.

         Over thousands of people took the Ice Bucket Challenge, a sensation in the summer of 2014. Nominated participants were filmed dumping buckets of ice-cold water on their heads and they in turn, challenged their friends to do the same. Challenged participants had 24 hours to comply or refuse and thus forfeit a charitable financial donation.
