The R. Bruce Merrifield Award was established in 1997 by an endowment from Rao Makineni. It acknowledges and awards the the lifetime achievement of a peptide scientist, whose work has acheived the highest level of scientific creativity.
Prof. Balaram, currently a Chair Professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, has contributed immensely towards the understanding of the structure and function of voltage gated transmembrane peptide channels.. He worked as the faculty of the Molecular Biophysics Unit at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore from 1973-2014, during which he was the director from 2005-2014. He is a recipient of the third highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Bhushan (2014).
