The National Centre for Biological Sciences is delighted to welcome Dr. Vinothkumar Kutti Ragunath who joins the Centre as its newest faculty member.
Dr. Vinothkumar's long-term research interest lies in elucidating the structure and function of challenging eukaryotic membrane proteins and large protein complexes using electron cryo-microscopy (cryoEM). He obtained his PhD in the field of Biochemistry and Biophysics from Max-Planck Institute of Biophysics/Johann Wolfgang University, Frankfurt, and did his postdoc with Richard Henderson at the MRC, Cambridge.
During the course of his doctoral and postdoctoral studies, Vinoth resolved distinct structural states of large molecular assemblies that are difficult to crystallise, using single particle electron cryo-microscopy. He plans to expand his work into understanding the biology of membrane proteins and complexes such as rhomboids and ion channels.
In addition to his research interests, Vinoth will anchor the establishment of the first major cryoEM facility in India. He is pursuing further developments in the technical capabilities of the cryoEM approach, with increased detector efficiency and software improvements.
