In a series of initiatives, The Bangalore Life Science Cluster takes science out of the confines of university to the public.

     The Honourable Dutch Health Minister, Mr. Bruno Bruins, accompanied by a delegation of nearly eight other health officials visited the Bangalore Life Sciences Cluster (BLiSc) on May 25^th, 2018.

The Linnean Medal is awarded every year by the Linnean Society of London to biologists as an expression of the Society’s esteem and appreciation of the awardees’ service to science.

     On 14 May 2018, Professor L S Shashidhara of IISER Pune was elected an EMBO Associate Member, joining the league of 61 other outstanding life scientists that were elected to its membership this year. Prof. Shashidhara is also a member of the Management Board at NCBS, Bangalore.

     Over thousands of people took the Ice Bucket Challenge, a sensation in the summer of 2014. Nominated participants were filmed dumping buckets of ice-cold water on their heads and they in turn, challenged their friends to do the same. Challenged participants had 24 hours to comply or refuse and thus forfeit a charitable financial donation.

     An increasing number of PhDs now question the wisdom of jumping headlong into a postdoc (the autopilot postdoc). For most, this dilemma is a result of fewer tenured positions, remunerations (or the lack of thereof), and the fear of irrelevancy to society at large due to a constricted research focus.

With nearly 2 –3% of the population of youngsters and adults (between the ages of 15–59 years) at risk of developing neuropsychiatric diseases, India needs to focus on understanding mental disorders.
