It has been raining awards for NCBS at the Founders’ Day Awards 2024, hosted on October 30 every year in TIFR Mumbai, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Homi Bhabha, Founding Director, TIFR. Every year, selected students, faculty, and staff are recognized for their contributions.
This year, the award ceremony for the staff recognition was held on October 27, while the ceremony for teaching and research excellence took place on October 30. Many members of the NCBS-TIFR community were felicitated this year, including three students, one faculty member, and three staff members.
Mr. Ranjith P.P., Scientific Officer D, and Mrs. Maithly Ramesh, Administrative Assistant D, received the 25 years service award. Mr. Praveena R.G., Engineer C, Electrical Department, was awarded the TIFR Spot Achievement Award 2024, for his extraordinary contributions to energy-efficient installations, renewable energy integration, green building automation, electrical safety, innovative electrical design in labs, store and technical services building, and efficient backup power systems planning
After completing his Bachelor of Science, Ranjith joined NCBS, where he has been involved with lab support and in devising various SOPs to ensure the smooth functioning of labs. He has worked on various aspects of lab support, including waste management, technical support, and lab kitchen operations. Ranjith was also instrumental in setting up the sports complex, organizing the stores in the new building, and overseeing Dolna, among other responsibilities. In his words, “My role involves making and designing things according to the evolving needs of labs”.
After working in another role for a few years following her Bachelor of Commerce, Maithly moved to Bangalore and joined NCBS in 1998. She started as PA to the Head of Administration & Finance Ms.Gayathri Kalia, IA&AS officer. From 2002 onwards, she worked in the administration department for 21 years, handling various roles. She also took on roles in the academic office, accounts department, and stores, before returning to the administration department in March 2023, where she currently works.
In the early days, both had to manually put things together and relied on books for information, unlike today, when answers can be found with a quick Google search. With each new lab and system that emerged over time, they had to acquire new knowledge. This hands-on experience helped them learn on the job and master new skills. Throughout their careers, both Ranjith and Maithly have reported to and worked with various heads. “NCBS is a second home, and the connections we’ve formed here are like a second family”, they say.
Both are stoked to receive the award, and to be recognized for their service. As echoed by previous winners, the culture at NCBS along with the freedom to grow and to learn has been a key reason for their dedication over the past 25 years! They look forward to their journey at NCBS for many more years.
