The BLiSC community congratulates Prof. Sumantra Chattarji on his election as a lifetime member of the EMBO in recognition of his remarkable achievements in the life sciences.
EMBO, or the European Molecular Biology Organisation has bestowed select scientists across the globe with this honour. It is through his leadership, strong commitment to research, and stellar publications that Prof. Chattarji has joined this distinguished group.
Prof. Chattarji is a neuroscientist and faculty at NCBS. Additionally, he is the theme coordinator for the Center for Brain Development and Repair (CBDR) established at inStem Bengaluru. NCBS, inStem, and the University of Edinburgh are partners in this DBT-funded initiative.
Speaking on the contribution of the newly elected members, including Prof. Sumantra, EMBO Director Maria Leptin says, “The new members have contributed to the success of research in the life sciences in Europe and around the world. As EMBO members they can help shape the future through EMBO’s work to support talented researchers, bring ideas together, and promote an international research environment conducive to excellent science.”

EMBO Members and Associate Members are more than 1800 of the best researchers in Europe and around the world. Ordinary members reside or were elected while residing in an EMBC Member State, and associate members reside outside of the EMBC Member States.
Election to EMBO Membership is recognition of research excellence and the outstanding achievements made by a life scientist. 88 EMBO Members and Associate Members have been awarded Nobel Prizes. The annual nominations and elections ensure that the membership remains at the forefront of life science research.
