I think that's the very fine line any hoax must tread - to be close enough to believable that some people will get it, some wont. If you read the Sokal piece, Sokal obviously put a lot of work into understanding both the style and content of the discipline he was satirising. Parts of the article sound quite plausible in isolation, so if a reader did just skim it they might be rather impressed.
