Prof. Vatsala Thirumalai was honoured with the Distinguished Alumni Award 2023 by Alagappa College of Technology (AC TECH), Anna University, Chennai. She is one among the only two women alumni to receive this award.
The award was presented to Thirumalai on 21 December 2023, in a grand ceremony held as part of AC TECH's 79th anniversary celebrations, with Shri Venkaiah Naidu, the former Vice President of India, doing the honours.
“AC Tech has produced many gems in all its years of existence. I am deeply honoured to be recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of such an elite institution. I will continue to do my very best to make my alma mater proud, “ says Thirumalai.
Thirumalai received this award in acknowledgment of her outstanding contributions to neuroscience research and her commitment to science outreach.
Using zebrafish as a model system, Thirumalai explores the neural mechanisms that facilitate animal movement. The findings of her research throw light on fundamental workings of the nervous system. Additionally, through her active involvement in science outreach, she has successfully popularized neuroscience in India.
