The National Centre for Biological Sciences congratulates Prof. Sandeep Krishna and Prof. P.V. Shivaprasad on being elected as INSA fellow and Dr. Arjun Srivathsa as Associate INSA fellow.
The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) was established in January 1935 to promote and nurture scientific excellence in India, harness scientific knowledge for national welfare and encourage dialogue between science practitioners and society.
Prof. Sandeep Krishna is a faculty at Simons Centre for the Living Machines which is supported by NCBS and Simons Foundation. His interests lie in understanding the nonlinear dynamics of biological systems across scales, ranging from feedback control in gene networks, synchronization and entertainment in cells, symmetry breaking in ecosystems, and the emergence of life on Earth. “It is an honour to be recognized by one's peers. I am especially grateful to my colleagues at NCBS for all their support for my research and my nomination to INSA. I look forward to contributing to INSA programmes aimed at making science and scientific institutions more accessible and more inclusive.”, says Prof. Krishna.
Prof. P.V. Shivaprasad, faculty at NCBS studies gene silencing and epigenetic modifications using plants as model systems. His group’s interests include the biogenesis and functions of small RNAs and the mechanisms that small RNAs and their partner proteins employ to regulate transcription and translation in plants.
To recognize the potential and contributions of the young scientists in the country, INSA initiated the Associate Fellowship in 2023.
Dr. Arjun Srivathsa, DST INSPIRE campus fellow at NCBS, says, he is honoured and humbled to be a part of the first cohort of associate fellows. His research focuses on understanding how meta-populations of socially complex species function across large, degrading, and human-influenced landscapes. Using dhole, an endangered carnivore species, his group hopes to examine and link the aspects of population dynamics, sociality, human interactions, and landscape ecology in the Western Ghats. Dr. Srivathsa adds, “I also hold this fellowship in high regard because my field of work, applied ecology and conservation biology, is severely under-represented in most such academic fraternities. I hope to see many more young scientists from ecology, biodiversity and conservation fields earn such esteemed fellowships in the future.”
